Three years ago, Josie joined Big Brothers Big Sisters with the hope of making a meaningful connection within her community. She wanted to build a bond with a family looking for additional support and guidance outside their immediate circle. At the same time, she saw mentorship as an opportunity to share her experiences, offer support, and make a positive impact on a young person’s life. In return, she has gained just as much from the friendship she has built with her Little, making the experience a true blessing.

For Josie, the most important quality in a mentor is a genuine interest in a child’s growth and development. She approaches her relationship with deep listening, curiosity, and empathy, always ensuring that she follows through on her commitments. She recognizes that many children in the program may not always have consistency in their relationships with adults, so being reliable and present is essential.

Among the many rewarding moments in her journey, one that stands out was receiving a heartfelt Christmas card from her Little’s mother. The message spoke to the appreciation and love shared between their families and the lasting bond that has formed between Josie and her Little. This moment reinforced just how much their connection has meant, not only to her Little but to the entire family.

Becoming a mentor has also led to unexpected personal growth. Through shared experiences and fun outings, Josie has reconnected with her own inner child, finding joy in simple moments. The relationship has also given her a deeper understanding of what it means to raise a child and the powerful influence a supportive adult outside the home can have. These moments of joy, honesty, and connection have made her a more content and fulfilled person.

To anyone considering becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, Josie has one piece of advice: DO IT! She acknowledges that the matching and approval process takes time, but believes that those who are meant to form this kind of bond are called to it. Her encouragement to new mentors is simple—be yourself, embrace the journey, and watch the magic happen.
