Fun and friendship — those two simple words perfectly capture the amazing impact of mentoring.
I’ve witnessed countless examples of how powerful mentoring can be for children in our community. The relationships formed between our mentors and Littles have the potential to change lives in profound ways.
For the Littles, these changes can be both subtle and significant. Having a mentor who genuinely cares for them and spends consistent, quality time with them can make all the difference. Each time a mentor shows up, shares a laugh, celebrates a success, encourages a new experience, or offers words of wisdom, they help shape that child’s confidence, outlook, and sense of self-worth.
For parents and guardians, the presence of a caring mentor offers reassurance and hope. They see someone nurturing their child’s strengths, providing a positive influence, and spending meaningful time with them- one of the greatest gifts a parent or guardian can receive is knowing that someone truly cares about their child.
For mentors, the impact can be just as profound—simple moments of fun, listening, and connection can change their lives too. In a world often filled with pressure and uncertainty, the joy of ‘being in the moment’ together — whether deciding which fun activity to try, who’s going to win the next round of UNO, or what flavor of ice cream to choose — reminds us of the beauty in simple connection.
Here are a some heartfelt words from our Littles, showing how mentoring creates real and lasting impact:
- “I like my mentor because she is kind.”
- “My mentor helps me figure out things when I’m having trouble.”
- “I am learning to love myself.”
- “I know my mentor cares about me because he shows up every week and asks me how I am.”
- “My mentor is awesome, and I look forward to spending time with her every week.”
- “I’m learning what to do in tough situations and how to deal with my feelings better.”
- “The last year with my mentor has made me feel less lonely.”
Over the years, much has changed — but what remains constant is this: Children need strong, caring mentors to build strong, healthy lives. Families need support and resources to create stability. Communities need people who are willing to share their time, compassion, and heart.
I have been truly blessed to work alongside so many generous mentors, resilient parents and caregivers, and incredible youth. They’ve shown me the power of caring for one another and how even the smallest moments can truly redefine a life.
